EUROLEAGUE FINAL FOUR

(update, 21:30)

Barça lost, don´t ask me te score. It was something like 75-80+. Barça had 11 point leads in the first and second halfs respectively. That much as for Ivanovic collapses and it´s not like I didn´t warn you about 8 hours ago... He absolutely lost control when the referees started their "whistling concert". Yes, their were strange decisions, EVERY CSKA penetartion towards the basket was called a foul and yes I am about to freak out myself but he´s the coach, he has an influence on the players and je should mabe have stayed mora calmed. Then again, here´s the fact:

34 fouls against Barça
21(!!!) against the Russians!

I mean, WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT? With 8 or 9 guys having played for Barça, that´s about 4 fouls on average per player!!! IN 40 MINUTES!!! That´s a joke!! Always the same story by FIBA and their referees. Unbearable. I am telling you. There you are watching the game with some excitement and they start all those weird calls and all that crap. Can we stop that? Will there ever be a damn Euroleague Final with no influence by the guys in orange (thanx for ruining the night guys)? For f*cks sake!!!! One year you get robbed the title with an illegal block in the last second, the next one referreing takes you out of the game when you have been controlling it for most part of it (and yes, you shouldn´t allow a 13-0 run no matter what)... I can´t talk about this anymore.

Enough, I think I´ll just jump into the Thames River tonight!!! Cheers

Nice game by Shammond, horrible one by Navarro (I don´t like the tendency his career is taking by the way...), Basile s*cked in the second half(isn´t he a European champion with his national team where was the experience here????), Fucka couldn´t hit a jumper to safe his life but he was quite good on defense with a ton of blocks...


To be played tonight in Prague. BARÇA playing MOSCOW tonight. The odds are not high that we beat the Russians. Us the clear underdogs, the good thing is we have not much preassure and we've still some good players even lacking so firepower down low...

I'll do my preview a bit later, for now, here's the guy who could be a key factor: Ivanovic, the coach who has not even figured out our rotation yet. Besides he is a Master in "Big Game Collapses" (and I am talking about game 5 of a a "Best of 5" Final here, winning by about 10 with one minute to go, at home and end up loosing!!!). Yep, that's our coach, guys. Knock on wood that he takes a limetea or something before the game.


Random cool fact about the game:

- Russian female supporters in Prague!! I mean, does it get ANY better than this in terms of supporter quaaaaaaaaality at a Sports event? A reporter needs to be sent over to catch a ton of pics of Czech and Russian birds, so we can run a poll afterwards (or even a bracket!) and vote for the cutest!! That would be awesome. I'm about to call the Spanish press and see what can be arranged. I'm getting excited here... Gosh!!

London, the day after...

... despite some beers the previous night, lots of emotions and few sleep I made it to work in time. All-Star performance in terms of waking up this morning I´m telling you. And except for the "gasolesque" beard I didn´t even look or feel that bad at work. Here one pic from the day after:

Actually my buddy "Canary Wharf" just called mentioning there´s a HIGH chance of getting tickets for Paris. he´s my hero if he pulls off that "deal". he´d automatically get consiered for MVP of the year 2006. And we´re only in April, so go figure the magnitude of getting those tickets... Now that would be as f*cking cool as it gets!!! We then only would have to crush Arsenal and I could end up waving my Barça flag from Heathrow to Trafalgar Square... good old Nelson watching all the way!!!
I might as well get punched several times so the idea is worth reconsidering. Especially knowing we will end up cruising past Germany or England, more probably the English, in the World Cup Final in Berlin on July, 09!!! Yep, Spain´s gonna win the World Cup, any problems? ; )

Also last night Memphis lost to Dallas yesterday evening in a so-so game by Gasol. The Spaniard scored 10 points in the opening quarter but faded during the rest of the game. Even worse, the German guy, Dirk, shot the lights outleading his team to a 2-0 overall socre for the series... Expect Pau to score 37 in game 3 in Tennessee.

Milan who?!?!?! BARÇA IN THE FINAL!!! "Nos vemos en París"



YESSS!!! BARÇA MADE IT TO THE FINAL!!!



For the first time since 1994 and it was well deserved throughout the whole competition. Best team, funniest team to watch, best player (Ronaldinho), best "rookie" (Messi) and best coach, RIJKAARD!!! Once a "one in the World" quality player for Ajax, Milan and the Dutch National squad he is proving himslef as a very, very good coach, probably the best one on Europe these days, and as he is receiving not much credit at all, I had to give Frank some props!!!

Barça played OK in the first half, Eto´o yet again missed to very, very clear goal chances and the team displayed a horrible preformance in they second half but hey, they held their own against Milan which is not that bad after all, considering we´re heading to Paris!!!! (yeaaaaaaaah)

Man of the match has to be either Edmilson (so figure out how bad the team played for some stretches of the game...) or Iniesta who is to be called up by Luis Aragonés for the World Cup squad, MARK MY WORDS (bets accepted)!!! The youngster is really starting to display his real potential just when this season is coming to a finish and is absolutely taking control over the tempo of the game compared to Van Bommel´s inconsistency and considering Deco´s lack of strength, which is quite worrying. Hopefully he´ll be able to rest a bit the weeks before the final and be fit enough for 90 minutes on the highest level, we need that guy!!!

Giuly is gaining back his old form and speed so dispite his up and down play he´ll be an important asset from here to the ened of the season maybe even clinching a spot in France´s World CUp roster (who´s gonna get crushed anyway by the Swiss but let´em have their illusions).

Our left back is and will be a problem unless we bring someone on board at the end of the season. Gio is a poor defender and he´s not even to be seen on offense as of lately while Sylvinho is just a so-so defender. Let´s just keep one of them (or even both and play Gio more in the midfield) but we need to look for a left back!!!

... and hell, I am tyred already. It was a tense journey today with such a big game looming over my head for the whole day!! It´s just awesome that we won and entering a Champions League Final be kicking out both, Milan and Chelsea, makes it even sweeter.

VISCA EL BARÇA, SIEMPRE!!!

D-Day for Barça... Biggest game in 12 years!!


Wednesday, April 26, for Barça tonight it's either Paris or... well, I don't even dare thinking of a possible failure tonight. It just shouldn’t happen and not only for us, the fans, who’ve been waiting for a return to the top of the World’s most important competition but because Barça is a better team than Milan and they play the better football. It’s that simple!!!

Actually I'm already quite excited about the game. It feels like the old Dream Team days when I was a kid. And I feel confident this time unlike some years ago, when we were in this same round as well and our team consisted of basically 2 or 3 good players but you couldn't talk about a real TEAM back then.
This time it's different. And I've felt like that all the way: both in Stamford Bridge, even when we fell one goal behind and watching the San Siro match. Barça is the best team in Europe these days, with the best player on their side, and probably they even were last season barring the dreadful 25 minute Spain vs. Chelsea.
So it's not about facing Milan tonight and having to be scared! It's them who are one goal behind, it's Milan who has to control Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Eto'o (will he regain a bit of his pre African-Cup form tonight?!?), it's them who have to set the pace of the game in order to have a chance at all. And don't get me wrong, I am not saying we will no matter what... One lucky or not so lucky goal by Milan could bring the fear out of certain Barça players and you know, they are an Italian side and know how to get the maximum in this shaky moments.

Well, I just wish my team the best and yep, I can see them advancing to the FINAL... Good luck guys!

A DREAM COMES TO AN END: Villarreal OUT!!!

- 22:29 pm update -

No goals and Villarreal is out of the competition. Too bad, as they missed a last minute penalty by Riquelme. :(

I feel very sorry for the team and their fans. It was maybe a unique chances in a million years for this team. Too bad their ace, Riquelme, missed the penalty. He looked very fearful when he was approaching the penalty spot though and din´t not even look at Lehmann, who actually chose his side before the Argentinian star even kicked the ball. But Riquelme never looked up...

The Yellow Submarine definitely would have deserved being in Paris or at least going into overtime but it just was not meant to be their moment in history. It was a thrilling Semi-Final, poor play but lots of emotions and respect for each other, maybe too much, but hey, you can´t blame two newbie in a Champions League Semi-Final for that, can you? Here some quick notes on the game:



  • Best player: Sorín, really played with some "balls" and caused lots of confusion for Arsenal defenders. Also Senna was rock-solid despite missing two straight passes in the final minutes. But Sorín stood out for playing with character in a match that needed guys with just that!! He fought as hard as anyone, never minding a tackle and giving his every best, as well as contributing on offense. Props to the ultimate warrior!
  • Worst player: The whole Arsenal team, except for Lehmann but above them Guille Franco, terrible player. A nightmare of a striker.
  • Best Moment: The pre-penalty excitement...
  • Cool random fact: One blonde female Arsenal supporter in the pub. Man, not that she was hot or something... Oh gooooosh!!! And she enjoyed her team, suffered during some stretches and mantained composure through the whole match until the final whistle. The misterious woman. Just cute!!! (Shouldn´t evry girl(friend) just be as much into sports? Can we make a rule here? Should I held a speach in famous Speaker´s Corner on this matter? ... or collect signatures?) I am telling you lads, WHAT A YOUNG LADY. Let´s move one before I have to take a cool shower or jump into the Thames river to cool off...
  • Props to...: ... the Villarreal fans. Just amazing!!!

Congratulations to Villarreal for an extraordinary Champions League season. Riquelme said before the game that if the team didn´t qualify, no one would remember them. Well they sue will remember you, Román. It´s hard at times but you gotta be proud of what you´ve achieved.

Heads up!!!



BIG NIGHT for Villarreal today. Actually it's the biggest game of their lives and it's gonna be damn hard to knock the English side ouy. Anyway, my prediction:

Villarreal 2 - Arsenal 0 after extra time.

Gonna watch it in a pub probably crowded with Arsenal fans.

Shall the Spanish prevail!!!

Random thoughts...

... about a movie (The Notebook), some Spanish Football, and yet again, the NBA PLAYOFFS (I love this gaaaaaaame):

On the movie, I watched it yesterday night, it´s called The Notebook and it´s a romaaaaaaaaaaaaaantic movie. My flatmate (a young lady) gave it to me and said it was romantic but good so I played it very late at night and yep it was OK but still... It´s just one of those movies more aimed for women. Call me insensible or whatever. That´s actually what a friend of mine, who absolutely LOOOOVED it big times and would actually marry Noah (for f*cks sake, what a name!!!), called me when she and I were discussing the plot on msn today... Hard words, yep... where´s the love?!?!? ... But I can´t help it, it is just one of those flicks that show love in such a beautiful way, it makes the ladies just wish their love stories were just like that. The title says, "Behind every great love is a great story". Yeah sure!!
Apart from that, Rachel McAdams is really fantastic in young Allie´s role. You could fall in love with her, definitely, and no one could blame you... She has great character and not only does she look lovely in the whole movie, but there´s something more behind Allie... Made me feel similar to when I watched misterious and always charming Jennifer Connelly in Walking the Dead (http://london-connection.blogspot.com/2006/04/theres-always-hope.html). Great chemistry between her and Ryan Gosling Aaaaaall the way!! Not much to argue here!!
I don´t know, maybe it was late, maybe I hadn´t recovered from the flu or maybe I was too tired from having watched too much NBA the night before, but I have to admit (under the risk of 95% of my male friends questioning my manhood from now one) that one thing touched me: The believe that there might be just this "one" true love in your life and that you maybe really should fight and go for IT, before you might loose out to fate! Pretty damn scary thought!! But that´s one thing, another one is that this scene (the kiss while the young couple is getting soaked on a boat) should have given me goosebumps, according to my friend good ol´ "Chupito". Noooooo way... and yep, maybe I am not that sensible after all. :D
Do I have to run a poll here to proof them wrong or what?!?

As for the Playoffs, here´s the situation after Game 1:

Miami (vs. Chicago), Detroit (vs. Milwaukee), Indiana (bs. New Jersey; only surprise so far) and Cleveland (vs. Washington) all lead 1-0 in the East.

In the West, the Suns (vs. Lakers), Spurs (vs. Kings), Clippers (vs. Nuggets) and Mavs (vs., well let´s call the Grizzlies "Pau and co." from now on) all lead 1-0, too.

For tonight I see Miami beating Chicago and the Clippers going 2-0 against Denver. (-> 25/04 update: Both tips where actually accurate... for once.)

Later this week, the Lakers (watch out for Kobe aka Black Mamba to score 57 or something in Game two, after his sub-par performance in Game one, where the Lakers still managed to hang on for the entire game...), Wizards and Nets will bounce back, whereas the Pistons and Spurs will go 2-0. Artest has been supsended for game 2 and the only hope I see for Sacramento is Bibby shooting the lights out for them and Shareef stepping it up (big question mark here). It could be one of those miracolous wins but the odds are not very high to be honest. A pitty, as I had Sacramento going to the Finals, maybe a bit too risky of a pick... But then again, HOPE IS A GOOD THING... :)
As for the Mavs-Grizz second game, hmmmmmmm, I could see the Grizzlies winning this one. Pau has to be on his highest level, which he actually is very close to, and if the supporting cast responds, and at least one of this guys (Miller, Battier, Jackson) has a GOOD game we might be talking Grizzzzzz aaaaaall the way. They match up pretty good with Dallas and Gasol should be able to punish them close to the basket but he has to stay down low and make his job. Then the only thing left is to control the pace of the game and not concede so many FT´s (and make their own ones: 21/29 for Memphis, yikes) and stop those mid range jumpers from the Mavs. Dallas has absolutely no one who can score from the post, hell, they made like 2 jumpers in the key in Game 1, you GOTTA take advantage of that!!!


Regarding the Relegation Drama... which I just discussed with my friend Cases on the phone. Well, this is the situation with 4 games (12 points) to go:
12 R. Sociedad 38 They will be saved I believe, upwards trend. But still, tough schedule with home games to Celta and Sevilla and away games to direct rivals such as Cádiz and Español. If they win in Cádiz next week it´s almost done for them, if not, it might still get close. If they even loose we might have a drama here...
13 Español 37 Favorable calendar here if Barça wins the league soon and R. Sociedad saves its a$$.
14 Betis 37 I bet they will be OK. Big game next week between them and Bilbao!!!
15 Athletic 35 It´s between them and Alavés, no way two Basque teams are relegated the same year, so, sorry Alavés...
16 Rácing 34 Could get very close here, their coach just resigned...
17 Mallorca 34 Will Cúper do his job... yet again? Tough schedule (Atlético, Valencia...).
18 Alavés 33 Clearly loosing control and not really giving signals of being able to save the season. Blame on you, Pieterman!!
19 Cádiz 32 I hope they can avoid relegation but I bet it´s between them and Rácing.
20 Málaga 24 Virtually relegated, but as my dad said in October already, when he saw them play against Atlético de Madrid: "They are absolutely horrible, terrible!!! They play the worst football in the Primera División. By far!!!". Yup, he can be scary at times with his football tips...

Weekend roundup and first Playoffs impressions

I watched the whole Heat-Bulls game yesterday and some of the Clippers vs Nuggets action. I only got to check the rest of the games through Gamecast, well, here are my first thoughts:

The Bulls played well, very well for stretches. Especially when they were knocking it down from beyond the arch. A real shame they don´t have ANYONE with some class who could score down low. Chandler is an absolute non factor on offense as we all knew already and it doesn´t seem like he will step up his game during the Playoffs. I wonder if he even practices low post moves or something. Shouldn´t his amazing physical ability help here? I just don´t get it.
Nocioni does all the little things, yep, but on offense he sometimes seemed to be slowing things down a lot down the stretch. Some key misses and turnovers hurt his team during the minutes when these kind of games are decided. Where the hell was Deng? Couldn´t Skiles have rested Nocioni for some time?
Gordon really got it going. Extraordinary scorer but he needs to calm down at the end of games, be smarter and not launch so many ill-advised shots. Easier said than done I guess :)
As pitty they have to go with a very small lineup all the time because of thier lack of inside presence...
As for Miami, yikes. I picked them as my champions but unless they improve their game and start being more fluent on offense and play some D, there´s no way they even get past Round 2!! Dammit. Shaq looked OK, he even had some nice blocks (5 in total!!). Wade took over in the fourth and left looking sort of injured but for the rest. Haslem got mental and threw his mouth protector to the referee after a non called fould. Never seen that before. Also very funny reaction from the referee who was reaaaaally pissed!!! Walker was poor, so were both PG´s, Williams, who´s useless anyway and we all knew that (why did they go for him???) and Payton who apart from washed up looks like he doesn´t care anymore, but we knew that as well. I mean, the Glove was unstoppable 3 years back and since he joined the Lakers he´s lost not one step ecah season but at least 4!! Probably bad Karma from good ol´ Kobe... I wonder why they cut Derek Anderson for the Playoffs, seing Shandon out there almost hurt my eyes...

As for the rest of games. Brand and Cassell looked good in the first minutes. I´m glad the Clippers managed to win despite not scoring a single FG in the final four minutes and almost f**ing up a 10 point lead in that time span. That would have been too harsh in their first Playoff game in ages... If Maggette steps up and regainshis old form after his injury, as the Playoffs advance, hell, they will be scary as any other top tier team out there...

The Kings loss in San Antonio was bad but they´ll bounce back... hopefully.

Lebron posted a triple double in his first ever Playoff game and Arenas and the whole Wizards´ shooting was so off that the team stood no chance of winning at all.

As for Sunday, the Pacers surprisingly just beat the Nets a few minutes ago without Jermaine O´Neal even playing much due to foul trouble... The guy had a good 4th quarter though.

Apart from that I´m still recovering from my flue and I went to Bath and Bradford-on-Avon this weekend. Nice places. The first a city with an awesome Roman bath and a few other nice places. The second one, a village, very small but with lots of flair and very relaxing. Liked both, but maybe I expected a bit more from Bath or it is just that we ended up in Bradford by chance and it was suprisingly nice, I can´t but recommend it. Here some pics:

Detroit over Milwaukee in 5
Washington over the Cavs in 6
Miami over Chicago in 5
New Jersey over Indiana in 6

Dallas over Memphis in 6 (But Pau will fight Dirk to death here, I just know it and I also know they hate each other so it will be closer than many of you think. Spanish pride and honour on the table here... Sadly the Mavs supporting cast is wicked. I can´t think of a reason why anyone would not mention this loud enough when including Nowitzki in all those "MVP discussion" and him carrying his team talks. He sure did but come on, look at Stack, Daniels, Howard, TERRY(!!!)... )
Clippers over Denver in 5
Kings over Spurs in 6 (the "roll the dice" pick of the year, just because I think Artest has made them a hell of a scary team. Because I´ve always believe in Bibby and well, they have a weak bench but I just don´t see San Antonio with Duncan hurt as strong as in the past, plus I think Parker is overhyped, Finley looks abit washed up and you might think I´ve no clue at all but Shareef will prove himself in this series, which actually are going to be the biggest games in his career, he just has to!!! All that with Horry´s permison, of course.)

Detroit over Washington in 7 (Arenas, a deadly executer, will be huge this Playoffs and yes, I always liked and supported him and wanted his shirt when he was playing for the Warriors, and my ex-gf, who was over in San Francisco by then, laughed at me for wanting HIS shirt... Now you tell me, if Arenas was the man or not... he just needs one more quality player on his team to make the leap next year. Someone down low.)

Anyway, I´m with the Grizzlies and Kings in this order. Other than these two I like the Clippers, Wizards and Toine...

Best lyrics... ever?

One of my all-time favourtites is "El Imperio Contraataca" (the Empire strikes back), a popular Spanish POP song of the 80´s by Los Nikis which tells the story of Spain being an Empire again. It starts with "Hace mucho tiempo que se acabó, pero es que hay cosas, que nunca se olvidan, por mucho tiempo que pase, 1582, el sol no se ponía en nuestro Imperio, me gusta mucho esa fraseee..." basically telling how biiiiig Spain´s Empire was a few centuries ago (which actually is true) and finishes with "Sereeeeeeemos de nuevo un Impeeeeerio..." or "We will be an Empire again" (which might become true once we win the World Cup in Germany this summer, just watch out!! Bets accepted here...). The song has wicked lyrics and puts you on the next level when you are in a party mood.
Special mention here for my buddy "Nachete". He must be the biggest, or at least TOP 3 fan of the lyrics worldwide and actually the only one who sung it with me wherever we were having some fun, no matter if we were in Düsseldorf, Bratislava, Amsterdam or even Moscow (in front of some Russian cops)... We´ll repeat in Leipzig and Berlin this June. Can´t wait! :))))

Well, let´s not get carried away and move on to the actual topic of the post. WANTED: Konrad Plautz...


... for "robbing" Villarreal in its Champions League Semi-Final at Highbury (1-0 for Arsenal through clumsy Touré). For fu**s sake, if the tackle in the box on José Mari (late first half) isn´t a penalty, what then?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Bad, bad, baaaaaaad calling referee!! Which rises the obvious question:

WHY IN THIS WORLD WOULD AN AUSTRIAN REFEREE BE CALLING A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL WHEN AUSTRIAN SOCCER SUX AND HE IS NOT USED TO THESE HIGH PREASSURE GAMES? Only the UEFA knows...

Other than that, I made it to the stadium despite my flu and thanx to CESC (who not only is a good player but also left me a ticket to pick up before the game. Many thanx!!!) and having been sitting in the North Bank, Lower Tie, I gotta admit that the die-hard Arsenal supporters are just incredible. They are damn loud and supportive, a good crowd, definitely!! They tend to shout "SHOOOOOOOT" whenever an Arsenal player gets within 200m of the goal and "CHEAAATER" when a player from the opposite team is laying on hte flor regardless how badly he might have been tackled by the "Gilbertos" on their own team, but still, they get my approval. Funny crowd, especially when a brave SQUIRREL jumped on the pitch (see picture below) and everyone stated the SQUIRREL; SQUIRREL; SQUIRREL chant. Very cool!! Much better than the fans at Stamford Bridge I have to say...



It also was Highbury´s last European competition game. So that´s another plus point for having been there. :)

As for the game: Bad day for both Forlán and Riquelme. Javi Venta, Villarreal´s right back had a nightmare of a game ("good" call Luis Aragonés). And well, Semi-Final still open but it doesn´t look bad for the gunners. I still hope for Villarreal´s resurgence though... We´ll see.

Weekend roundup

Barça beat Madrid and made it to the Euroleague Final Four. Pretty much unexpected... but hey, still nice!!!! I mean, it´s gonna be pretty tough against CSKA Moscow but still, if our backcourt has the day and Kakiouzis and Fucka can contribute we may still have a chance. You never know in a Final Four. It happened to Barça already too many times befores that they were the favourites and got kicked out in the Semi-Final, so now that they are the underdogs, who knows... I´ll keep updating on this matter.

P.S. Since I hyped Williams the other day in my post he´s been playing like crap!!! We need him big times in Prague!!!

Random thoughts:

- This city never rests. Everything was open for Easter Friday. Where´s the tradition?

- Actually, not only is everything open every day (which is sort of good when you need to buy stuff), but the streets are too crowded, too often. I was in the Knightsbridge area this afternoon and everything was so crowded, especially outside of Harrods, as if they were giving things away for free. Amazing, I am telling you... I wanted to go outside of London to see something but the wetaher´s been kinda sh*tty today so I just bought myself a pair of jeans instead. :D

I think that´s been it as for me going back to that place. yeah, the crowd is good and they have nice beers but they basically throw you out by turning the lights on (like when you had to go to school but wouldn´t wake up), and just wjen a few moments later one guy comes up with the "hey at least they didn´t turn off the music" phrase of the night you can expect the music to be gone in 5 minutes time. No respect for the customers, I am telling you!!
Nicest bar tenders so far: The two chicks at George Sports Bar (Greater Portland Street) one of them proclaiming herself "Miss Ronaldo". The thing is she apparently finds him cute, whatever... The Italian guy at Harlem would
rank second for his cocktail-making abilities. The bad thing is him and his workmate looked like the guys from rightsaidfred (http://www.rightsaidfred.com/) veeeery strange couple to say it in a soft way...

Español wins the COPA DEL REY!!!


With an amazing 4-1 shootout, Español won its 4 Copa del Rey in over 100 years!!! An amazing performance by Lotina´s underdogs.

Congratulations to ESPAÑOL. Enjoy your well deserved success!!!
First thoughts:
- See, 4-1 the score, that´s why I will never make a living out of betting
- On the picture above: where is Español´s coach? Can you find him?
Answer: upper right side, almost out of the picture with his ODD look yet again staring into...
a) The stands?
b) Nowhere... He just lost his mind completely after such an exciting evening.
c) Watching out for the referee, to make sure he can chat to him about some random foul in the 92. minute.
d) Just the exit and thinking "let´s get the hell outta here" (we all know by now that he doesn´t feel too comfortable in these sorts of situations).
It´s good he at least did an amazing coching job tonight, so props to Lotina as well.
P.S. Could we possibly have gotten someone to film him on the team´s celebrations? How much would that video cost? 20 quid? 50?

Español - Zaragoza: The Final Fight for the COPA DEL REY (with update)


Haven´t been able to follow these two teams too much as of lately, unfortunately. Anyway, as promised my Spanish Cup Preview, a small tribute to 2 teams who well deserved playing in the Final:

Key players: The Milito Bros., Ewerthon and Cani on Zaragoza´s side. Tamudo and Kameni (who´s been just confirmed as the starting keeper for tomorrow) and maybe even De la Peña, if he has one of "those" days for Español. (And no, I won´t mention Fredson here, J.M.)

If Zaragoza scores in the first half, I believe they would seal the game. Ewerthon could possibly kill Español on the break. If Español can held its own against the aragonese squad for 45 minutes they might have a bigger chance.
I believe Zaragoza has the better team. As for determinant players (listed above), a guy like Kameni could have a huge impact on this Final, given he is inspired. I feel he´s one of those rare keepers, who when on fire can single-handedly decide a game for his squad.
Not much more to add for now, If I can think of something i will post it tomorrow before the game.

Betting tip: 2-2 Draw and extra time...

Random guy you´d be happy about if any of the two teams win: Buddy Cases from Germany who´s been a lifetime Español supporter and has experienced the emotion and the magic surroundig a Final about 3 times in his live, one of them being the UEFA Cup loss to Leverkusen, which must have been as tough to swallow as it gets (well maybe except for Barça´s misfortune against Steau in Seville in 1986) a drama, I am telling you...

Possible funny moment of the night: Either watching Lotina complain about the ref. at the end of the game or seing him celebrate the victory, either one works. The first one because he always does complain (as Víctor Muñoz already pointed out) and there´s always some "spicy" comment in those speaches.
The second one because he always looks so stressed worried and has such an odd look on his face that you wonder if he would even know what to do and how to react if his team won. High comedy, I am warning you here!!

Great atmosphere for the game in Madrid, good weather, perfect day for a Final and about 30.000 spectators arrived from zaragoza and another 23.000 from Barcelona.
I didn't do my homework correctly yesterday and overlooked Pandiani's presence on Español's squad. No, he's one of those gunners who can kill you. Watch out for him tonight. He's gonna play with a chip on his shoulder considering he's on loan for Español. A good game in the Final definitely would help raise his value for next seson considering he's not returnong to the Premier League. Expect some quality from the "Rifle" tonight.

Weekend summary

Went out for some beers at Bonaparte and a couple of drinks at Harlem. Two weird names for pubs but it was fun still! First we had our beers du jour at the place with the French name. You gotta hate the name and the bartenders were far from cool but still, the venue was sort of OK... Then, Harlem was a small place with a DJ who could´ve easily been from Harlem himself. I went to ask for a song which leaded to the following exchange:

(note that he was playing "black music", lotsa rap and stuff like that)

Me: "Hey man do you have this one song, "Ghetto Supastar"?
"Random black DJ": NO! ( odd look on his face) ... why would I have it?

I just turned around and left. I mean, what the hell? Why would a DJ, playing RAP and similar stuff, have a song in his repertoire, which is exactly THAT type of music? Maybe because he´s a bloody damn DJ? Or because he had the same look on his face as ODB, who casually performs in this particular song? Poor attitude, I am telling you...

On Saturday I went playing basketball with some Cypriots and 1 Greek! After one and a half hours I was f***ed! Dead!! Nice game though. Now, the most interesting thing about the game was knowing how a foreign guy must feel on a team from a country which language he doesn´t speak!! You basically hear the other guys talking and swearing and can´t make sh*t of it... It´s always interesting to experience these things...

BASKETBALL: Now that we are talking bball, the Celtics just were loosing 101-86 to the Knicks with 25 s. to go, which is possibly as sad as it gets... At least Gerald Green is getting some minutes and proving he can score.
Barça and Madrid are tied in their Euroleague series, the tie breaker coming on Tuesday I believe. Barcelona just lost to Madrid in the Spanish League yesterday. That makes it two in a row in terms of losses to Real in 3 days. Not the best thing to boost your confidence before the most important game of the season!!! Before, you knew what you had with Barça, they dominated Madrid mostly for the past 5-6 years and when not, you knew they had few chances. Now, they are a mistery of a team. As inconsistent as it gets, never fully playing up to the expectations. Poor coaching. A mess!! They better turn this sh*t around on Tuesday!!!

GOLF: In the Augusta Masters it looks like Phil Mickelson is gonna win it all. Jiménez was close early on the Fourth Round (-4) but with one hole to go it looks like he will finish all even and 6 behind the leader. Olazábal could finish second, he´s 3 strokes behind Mickelson right now, with just 4 holes to go for the soon to be winner. Nevertheless, the Spaniard put on an impressive performance this last day leading the pack with a target of just 66, 6 below the course par. Now that I checked, this is also probably the best single round in the whole tournament this year!! Nice comeback José María!!

FOOTBALL: Interesting to see Khan removed from the German starting lineup for the World Cup. That´s served for some real turmoil in Germany, everyone complaining here and there. Bayern´s Hoeness heavily criticising Klinsmann as for the moment (German league is in a decisive phase and Bayern was facing Bremen in a clutch game the day after the news) not being the most appropriate for making this comment. But hey, what can you expect of a coach who lives in the States and coaches the Germans and comes back to his home country from time to time, watches some of the games on tape or satellite TV, if even that!?!?! That´s IS a JOKE!! Never would be allowed in probably any other country. And it´s not like the team is achieving good results. Actually, this is another good topic to discuss further, as the World Cup comes closer. :) It´s always nice to see the German Football team struggling.
The other interesting point came from Germany as well, where Bayern got demolished in Bremen (3-0 for the home side) and hamburg closed its gap to just 4 points behind Magath´s side with 5 games to go. That´d be a shocker if hamburg could still take away the lead from Bayern!!! No one counted them as title contenders, may I say except for myself, who put some money on them to win the Bundesliga at the start of the season, the spread being 18 to 1.
As for the Spanish League, just 6 games to go and Barça still leading the pace 11 points ahead of both Valencia and Real Madrid.

Now, if that's the person who's gonna have some impact (through analysis or research...) on decisions regarding draft candidates the Knicks stuff might consider... it's sort of a scary thought, how an NBA organization might be run. Then again, looking how thier GM, Isaiah Thoma, has performed so far, it might actually be not that bad of an idea letting the intern run the show and if possible even have some impact on trades.... at least some of the fans might feel more confortable with the idea!!

Champions League Review... and Preview

Well, no big surprises at all, except for Villarreal´s win maybe. As it stands now even two Spanish teams could advance to the big Final in Paris (knock on wood). Here my REVIEW:

Milan defeated Lyon with its usual bit of "luck". There was a clear penalty in the second half not awarded to Lyon (Costacurta on Malouda I believe) which could have changed everything but in the end the everlasting Milan troupe prevailed. How is it possible Inzaghi keeps scoring those important goals? Can´t he retire or something?!?! Never liked the guy.

Arsenal almost sentenced its playoff against Juve with a 2-0 win at Highbury in the first game already. The team is seeming to get into its rythm and they are not even conceeding goals on D which is UNBELIEVABLE considering their defenders, well, probably except for Eboué. The guy from Ivory Coast who has been pretty much impressive in Lauren´s absence! As for Juve, what can I say.
There´s a tendency amongst top European teams, to concentrate so much on D, playing safe football and controlling the pace of the game when they are ahead in the scoreboard, that these teams are just LOST when they have to take the responsibility of attacking and looking to score. The consecuence is that they normally approach that effort in a much desperate way, the result obviously turning out to be the worst, which is: not being able to score at all and hence being kicked out of competition. Well deserved is all I can say! here some examples:

- Liverpool was the first to fall this season. With a 0-0 score in Portugal, Benfica scored first at Anfield and sealed the game. Liverpool was incapable of getting back and eventually ended up loosing 0-2 at home.

- Same story for Juve. With an 0-2 defeat at Highbury they were just not capable of turning their series around. Call it lack of habit or whatever but they were lost against Arsenal, at home, in their biggest game of the season and couldn't even score a goal in 180 minutes. That said, they were already lucky to reach the Quarter-finals in their matchup with Werder.

- Chelsea meanwhile is sort of a mistery to me. They have maybe lacked some more fortune in their last two Champions League seasons. Nevertheless, I firmly believe Barcelona was superior to them in all four games they´ve played against each other in just over a year, except probably for the first 25 minutes at Stamford Bridge last season. For the rest, they were lucky to eliminate Barça last year with a fourth goal that shouldn´t have counted, they got destroyed by Barça on home ground this season, and not just thanks to Del Horno´s red card (awarded for some fierce tackling, no matter what Chelsea players argued), but because Rijkaard´s side was just the better team. And at camp Nou this year they got clearly outplayed by the Spanish squad but still were close to causing some tension if Crespo had scored 0-1 in the second half with a ball that just went wide a little... So, yep, they have the same tendency of focusing on D, not knowing really how to attack the opponent (see Liverpool´s series last year) but their coach, Mourinho, is smart, very smart I might say, and the players are commited. Anyway, their faith seems to be fading a little these days...

As for Barça and Villarreal everything (almost) has been said so far and I don´t wanna go into detail to much to not bore anyone.

Now the PREVIEW. I see the semi-finals as following:

Arsenal-Villarreal: I couldn´t actually tell a winner here. If Riquelme and Senna can control the tempo of the game and the team can somehow sneak out of Highbury with 1 goal and even a 2-1 deafeat or much better a 1-1 draw, I would pick them as the winners of this series. If Arsenal keeps a clean sheet in the first game and scores it´s gonna be tough for Pellegrini´s side.

Milan-Barcelona:

One by one analysis:

Dida vs Valdés: Draw. Valdés is far from being the best keeper I´ve seen and his character raises questions as well as his many errors this season which might have cost Barça 6-9 points in the league. Dida, well, he makes mistakes as well, so that´s good.

Kaladze, Nesta, Stam and Serginho vs Belletti, Oleguer, Puyol, Gio: Draw

Kaladze is OK but he plays off position on the right back and even if he plays central defender and Stam is on the right that won´t solve Milan´s problems at all, not even if Cafú comes back in time as he´d get absolutely torched on D by either Ronaldinho or Eto´o. As for Stam, I don´t like the big dutch guy at all, too slow. Nesta is good although a bit overrated. I´ve always liked Serginho, but then again you don´t want a Brasilian wing back player on your team when it´s about having to defend, and that's exactly what they'll have to do against Barcelona's powerful attack! They have such a tendency of being offense first minded guys that they won´t even get back when they should, like Belletti in yesterday´s match against Benfica. Could someone of the coaching stuff please have told him "Hey we´re up 1-0, so stop f****ing pretend you are a wing player and play some DEFENSE!!!!". Brazilians&Commitment, that´s a rare thing to find in football, with some honorable exceptions (Cafú, Mauro Silva, Donato...).
On the other hand, for Barça, we have Belletti who when setting his mind to the game and not showing up thaaaat much on the offensive end is OK, Oleguer who´s decent and holds his own against almost every striker without being spectacular, the best central back in the world: Puyol who´s an all hard work, real "blue collar" guy and Gio, and as I don´t wanna put up the same arguments as in Belletti´s case for the Dutch guy, I´m gonna stop here.
Lesson here for the Beguiristain&Rijkaard tandem: get us a left back who can actually play some D and if possible a right back as well, or at least bring back Damiá and let him develop slowly along the more experienced guys.

Pirlo, Seedorf and Gattuso vs Edmilson or Motta, Iniesta and V. Bommel: Draw (slight edge Milan especillay considering Barça will be without Deco, who, to be honest, is running on fumes a little anyway. Maybe that little rest could do him so well...)

It all depends on the game Iniesta and V. Bommel display. The Spanish youngster has been good at times but has looked raw and inconsistent at others. Van Bommel has just not found his place with the team yet and seems incapable of scoring even if his live depended on it which is never a good sign this far into competitiona and having to play Milan.

Sheva, Kaká and Inzaghi/Gillardino vs Ronaldinho, Eto´o and Messi/Giuly, Larsson: Draw (slight advantage Barcelona just because Ronaldinho makes such a difference these days... and because Messi might be back for some action)

Milan´s starting three is impressive, Barça´s, too. A couple of things that worry me about Barcelona:

1) Eto´o has lost his scoring instincts a little. I´m still confident he will give his best against Milan.
2) Ronaldinho has lost a step of explosiveness as of lately as well, is he maybe saving himself a little for the World Cup? It surely looked like that in the first half at Stamford Bridge, where after being fouled several consecutive times at the start of the game he didn´t get into rythm until close to the end of the match.
3) Give Milan something to think about. If Messi is not 100% ready give Guly, the tiny French guy, a run! Milan´s defenders are mostly slow so he can do some damage there!! Besides the Larsson+Eto´o formula´s not working as expected.

My two cents:

Arsenal 1 - Villarreal 1
Villarreal 2 - Arsenal 1 (extra time)

Milan 1 - Barça 2
Barça 1 - Milan 1

BARÇA IS THROUGH!!


With a 2-0 win over Portuguese side Benfica, Barcelona made its way to the Champions League Semi-Final where the team is set to join mighty Milan!

Barça dominated most of the game but couldn´t quite finish off Benfica,a problem they are expiriencing more often than not in this last part of the season, and score the second goal that would have definitely iced off the match. I´m starting to get worried by Barça´s lack of efficience in front of opposite goalkeepers. They need of a healthy Messi back is urgent and even Guly should get a run in some games instead of Etoo or Larsson or the seldom rested Ronaldinho. Lets even give Maxi (I think he´s cool, and yes I know, I´m probably about the only one who thinks that among Barcelona supporters) a try in some less important legaue games, it can´t hurt and there´s not much more to take from considering Ezquerro´s poor and SOFT play this season, Gabri´s inability to meet the team´s necessities and the many injuries this team has had this season.

Anyway, COOL WIN guys and lets hope we can show Milan and Ancelotti who rules Europe!!!

P.S. Van anyone, possibly Rijkaard himself or even Deco , explain our defenders how and WHEN tomake fouls when the other side is counter-attacking? I´m about to freak out that every counter attack actually leads to a foul near the penalty box or an uncontested shot on Valdés goal!! It´s not admissible that this far into the season this still happens (and it has happenede against benfica in both games and against Chelsea...) and a team like Milan usually takes advantage of this "lack of concept" understanding on defense... So PLEASEEEEEE, foul as close to the midline as you can, even though you´re risking a yellow card, but don´t let the striker come "this" close to scoring!!

Sports roundup: VILLAREAL makes history!!!

With a dramatic 1-0 defeat, VILLARREAL went through to the Champions League 2005-06 Semi-Finals in its first ever competition in the tournament!! The goal, scored by Arruabarrena in the second half of the game, puts the first Spanish team in the Last 4 of the tournament with Barça hopefully to follow on Wednesday. This a team built around guy who absolutely controls the tempo of the game: Riquelme. He´s not the quickest, nor does he play defense or dribble around defenders, what he does best is being the leader of the team, getting his teammates great chances to score with his very precise passes, scoring some himself through free kicks and rarely loosing posession. Typical guy who makes life much easier for his the players around him. He´s joined by:

- A pair of good keepers (Viera and Barbosa). Both of them solid, whish is the least you´d expect these days.
- Some solid defense, with much coveted Argentinian central defender G. Rodríguez leading the group
- A guy who SHOULD make Spain´s squad in the next World Cup: Central Midfielder Marcos Senna (I´ll make a case for it later this month) who´s all about work and taking preassure of the rest of the guys up front with his his teammates and real physical presence in the midfield.
- The crazy warrior of the bunch, "Kamikaze" Sorín. A guy who will either start as a left back or a left midfielder but will play every position from central back to striker during the game. He just plays wild and puts a valuable effort on the pitch, although some times loosing composure a little.
- And finally Diego Forlán. The striker who found his place in football when he joined the Spanish competition in the 2004-05 La Liga edition, where he earned "Pichichi" honours (top scorer) edging Camerunese superstar Eto´o by one goal.

All that being said, they are far from spectacular but their biggest asset is they are a TEAM and they really play like one. If just Guayre was part of the show more often instead of José Mari and they had one more striker to take some preassure of Forlán... But hey, awesome job anyway!!!Coming from a town with a population of only 45.000 the greatness of Villarreal´s achievement in European competition this season only gets magnified, putting the club and the city on every football map!



If Arsenal follows, we´ll try to be there!! Congratulations to the team, the players, managment, who did an incredible job for the last years recruiting young talent and luring good players who didn´t get enough recognition elsewhere, the coach and everyone involved. Well deserved guys!!!

P.S. Additional "feel good" note of the game: You know what team Luis Figo plays for these days? Yep, exactly: Inter!! Just aweeeeeeeeesome! :)

Euroleague Basketball: Barça 1 - Real Madrid 0

In the Quarter Final of the basketball Euroleague Barcelona dstroyed Real Madrid (72-58) clinching victory number 1 in the best of three series, behind 23 points by ex North Crolina star Shammond Williams. Not that European basketball is very interesting anymore thsese days but beating Real Madrid is always biiiiiiig fun and making a run to the European Final Four is always sort of entertaining.
I´m glad for Shammond, a good player for European standards who seems to have been unfairly criticised far too often, considering Barça´s lack of an interior game and its overcrowded backcourt, where the team recently acquired former Tar Heel teammate of Williams, Ed Cota. Shammond shoots the three well, rarely misses a free throw, is a top passer in Europe and he even plays some D when he puts his mind into it. Good player, I hope the team resigns him and focuses on bringing a more balanced squad into next season.
I´m just thinking I should possibly write a report on this matter soon as well. We might have not just a problem of "roster infrastructure" here but also a problem with our coach, Ivanovic, who doesn´t seem capable of figuring out the rotation, with 50 games into the season... and he gets paid for that!!!
More to come soon, let´s not ruin the moment, now! :P

Beckham, stop being a whiner!!

Now even Beckham has started to complain about Spanish referees. The once polite and always educated marketing product from the UK has lost his composure due to his team's lack of presence when it most counted and his own inability to carry struggling Real Madrid as the team leader he was once supposed to be. David, c’mon, just play football and stop being a lady, or you and your "past his prime primadonna" teammate Roberto Carlos could soon be joining a circus as the main attractions!

With their 30-43 record, and despite Paul Pierce turning into an NBA superstar in his prime, pretty much comparable to the likes of Lebron, Wade, Kobe, the Celtics 2005-06 season comes to an end, with the team having realistically almost no chance of making the Playoffs. It’s sad but with Paul and Wally both in shape for next season and the youngsters being more experienced and contributing as they have this year with some improvement coming from Big Al, we are set for the Playoffs and number 17 within 3 years!!

There's always hope...


There´s a part referring to movies in the blogger profile, well, here are some of my Favorite Movies :

Dead poet´s society: Just an awesome "students seeking for more in their young lives and showing some pride" movie whatsoever. Robin Williams inspires a class of young students in an elite American boarding school to seize the day and break some rules Loved it!

The Untouchables: You gotta love Sean Connery here and the whole movie is just cool.

Back to the Future: A classic. I still enjoy it everytime I watch it!!

The English Patient: They might say it´s just a romantic movie bla, bla, bla... but it´s more than that, it´s about the passion of the characters (Great performances by always reliable Ralph Fiennes and lovely Kristin Scott Thomas) and the complexity of emotions.

Donnie Brasco: Al Pacino and Johnny Depp head to head in a movie about an FBI undercover agent (Depp) who infiltrates the Mafia in NY, sees his real life fall apart and finds himself identifying with his new buddy (Pacino) to an extent where leaving his actual job would put his new friend in greta danger. Just plain GREAT!

Contact: Very nice (science fiction) story about FAITH, with an ending that makes you think...

Hardball: Keanu Reeves, a gambler, ticket scalper, coaching a baseball team in a poor neighbourhood in Chicago. Sad ending.

Carlito´s Way: Another cool Al Pacino movie... A newly released-from-jail criminal tries to straigthen up his life but is pulled back in to the nasty underwold he desperately tries to escape from when he does one last job to help a former "friend" (Sean Penn).

The Usual Suspects: This one has a just a stunning finnish. It is just a f***** awesome movie from the start til the end. Five criminals are rounded up by NY police and no one´s really comfortable with the situation. The whole movie evolves around two storylines which brilliantly unite at the end of the movie.

Malèna: Nice movie with very cute Monica Bellucci. II World War, Italy. Ennio Morricone soundtrack. "Time has passed and I have loved many women ... And as they've held me close, and asked if I will remember them .... I've said yes, I will remember you. But the only one I've never forgotten is the one who never asked, Malèna."
Interesting last sentence of the movie. Makes you think if you shouldn´t "pull the trigger" more often and go for a person if you like her, even if the odds aren´t that good... Obviously it doesn´t apply to the plot cos Renato is about 12 years old and Malèna is sort of a myth for him, but anyway.
Random note: Non of my friends in Madrid would come with me to see it in the cinema... I´m happy I went on my own after all :)

Waking the Dead: With Jennifer Connelly and a Senator candidate (Billy Crudup, great job!!) who starts seeing his, thought to be dead but never forgotten, ex girlfriend (Jennifer C.) everywhere, during the stressing last days of his campaign. Couldn´t tell why but this one impressed me. It´s really good.

and most notably ...

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: This one is a masterpiece. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, both sensational. Also Bob Gunton, great work!! And the ending... ASTONISHING!!

As for commedies, Road Trip, American Pie and Meet the Parents would definitely make the list. And in terms of Sports movies I´d go with Jerry MaGuire, Hoosiers, Any Given Sunday (yet again Al Pacino) and Hardball: Keanu Reeves, a gambler, ticket scalper, coaching a kid baseball team in a poor neighbourhood in Chicago. Pretty sad ending...
